The Pollyanna Syndrome

There is a very dangerous trend in the American Christian churches. A number of historic mainline churches have caved in to political correctness and forsaken the Bible as their only guide for doctrine. It seems that whatever will offend the least number of people becomes their new doctrine regardless of what the Bible says on the subject. As I look at Scripture, it is crystal clear on abortion, homosexuality, heterosexual immorality, lying, cheating, child molestation, marriage and the list goes on and on.
I have come to the conclusion that the church at large has been infected by the Pollyanna Syndrome. If you remember the movie, Pollyanna adopted happy talk and spread her cheer to an entire city. This works for Pollyanna, as the town is transformed to love and good deeds, but when it comes to God's church, NOT man's church, it is a totally different subject. He demands that it be done His way. Today's pastors have been so indoctrinated with seeker friendly speech that the messages they preach are filled with ONLY those passages that will make their audiences feel good about themselves. The tragic part is that God has a totally different take. Jesus spoke more about Hell than He did about Heaven. The Bible is balanced between the gentle and harsh. There are many things that God hates, especially sin.

"There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that run rapidly to evil, a false witness who utters lies, and one who spreads strife among brothers."      Proverbs 6:16-19

This passage alone covers a multitude of sin. When was the last time you heard a message on these topics or the Seven Deadly Sins? There are still many pastors who have not caved in but it seems that they are few and far between, according to reports that I regularly get and from personal experience. My passion comes from being a pastor for over thirty years myself and having to learn the lesson and get back to teaching ALL the Bible.

His Son came to take our sins on Himself when He died on the cross. Even Larry King, while interviewing Joel Ostein, called his gospel a "cotton candy gospel," and so it is. There is NO salvation without repentance from sin. This means to turn 180 degrees from the lifestyle we had before we came to Christ for salvation and walk in a new life of obedience to His commands. Today's gospel seems to be one that never mentions the following words: sin, judgment, repentance, obedience, consequences, hell, condemnation, the killing of innocent life, sexual perversion (many are ordaining perversion into ministry, hetero and homo) and this has shown up in huge numbers of children being molested by these so-called ministers. Where is the outcry from those offended? Children's lives are ruined and they just move them to a new church to do the same things to other innocent children, while the "church" pays out huge sums of money to "settle" out of court. God weeps at these abominations! The list of words and Scriptures left out of their preaching could fill many books. Note one of those passages that will never be used from their pulpits.

"Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money, saying, 'Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.' But Peter said to him, 'May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money! You have no part or portion in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. Therefore repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray the Lord that, if possible, the intention of your heart may be forgiven you. For I see that you are in the gall of bitterness and in the bondage of iniquity.'  But Simon answered and said, 'Pray to the Lord for me yourselves, so that nothing of what you have said may come upon me.' "  Acts 8:18-24

Simon was confronted with the full impact of his sin and when he heard the consequences, he repented and cried out for the cure.

It is called exposing the problem so that the medicine will be wanted for the cure! What doctor would examine us, and then for fear of offending us, tell us that we are just fine, when in reality we have a life threatening disease. No, he tells us what is real and then tells us what we MUST do to try and stem its destructive course. Man too has a terminal disease called sin and rebellion against a Holy God. If man ignores God's call he WILL face the consequences that are clearly laid out in the Bible, the Lake of Fire/Hell.

It is time, in America, for the preachers to stop and examine their M.O. and see if it lines up with the Bible. The last time I looked, people do not want the truth candy coated. I talk to people all the time who are so frustrated that they cannot find a church that is teaching the word of God but are putting out sermonettes for Christianettes, who drive their Corvettes, while eating Raisinettes. Pathetic! This nation was founded on the Bible and it must be maintained on it as well or it will go the way of every great nation in history who caved in to godlessness. Wake up! If you feel like this, then tell your pastor to get back to teaching the whole counsel of God. A whole generation could wind up left outside the kingdom of God when they really wanted to be in. Half a gospel is no gospel at all!
