There are many ideas floating around, in this election year, concerning taxes. I find it interesting that this issue always comes up when politicians are trying to get re-elected or elected to office. Many have talked of doing away with the current tax code and replacing it with something of a flat tax so that everybody pays their equal share. At present, many of the rich and the poor get away with paying nothing. We are all responsible to paying our taxes, for the operation of our government. Sadly, what the politicians are doing with our money is often a disgrace.
I was reading the Bible this morning and came across a verse that jumped at me and immediately I saw a justification for having a flat tax. This verse dealt with the men who could serve, in case of war, as Israel got ready to enter the promised land, but it applies to our situation as well. This was for every man twenty years old and up. Take a look at it.
"The rich shall not pay more and the poor shall not pay less than the half shekel, when you give the contribution to the Lord to make atonement for yourselves." Exodus 30:15
I wonder if anything will change this time. The tax code is out of control. Tax freedom day, this year, will be April 23. This means that every cent we earn until April 23 goes to pay our yearly load of taxes. Think about this. Almost four months of our wages go to pay taxes. This includes all the taxes besides the IRS. Just think of how many times we pay a tax. Sales tax, gas tax, landing fees, property tax, city tax, state tax etc. If we buy a new car, we pay tax on it. If it is re-sold, the person who buys it has to pay it again, and again, and again each time it is re-sold. This is not to say that a flat tax would do away with any of these taxes, but it would level the playing field for the big tax.
This is why God set a tithe for His people in the Bible. The word tithe means 'a tenth.' If everyone in the USA paid 10% of their income, the amount would be staggering. Loopholes and write-offs are huge leaks in the system. Could it possibly be that someone would actually follow through on this? I hope so.
