The people of Israel made the mistake of replacing God with a human ruler, a king. When they asked for a king, their Judge, Samuel, prayed to God for guidance. God told him that the people were rejecting Him as their King and wanted a human king. God told him to speak to the people and give them instruction as to what would happen if they proceeded with this choice. The following is the challenge and the people's response.
"So Samuel spoke all the words of the Lord to the people who had asked of him a king. He said, 'This will be the procedure of the king who will reign over you: he will take your sons and place them for himself in his chariots and among his horsemen and they will run before his chariots. He will appoint for himself commanders of thousands and of fifties, and some to do his plowing and to reap his harvest and to make his weapons of war and equipment for his chariots. He will also take your daughters for perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and your vineyards and your olive groves and give them to his servants. He will take a tenth of your seed and of your vineyards and give to his officers and to his servants. He will also take your male servants and your female servants and your best young men and your donkeys and use them for his work. He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his servants. Then you will cry out in that day because of your king whom you have chosen for yourselves, but the Lord will not answer you in that day."
Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they said, 'No, but there shall be a king over us, that we also may be like all the nations, that our king may judge us and go out before us and fight our battles."
1 Samuel 8:10-20
Notice how much they had to give up to their "RULER." Notice how little they got back for their investment. Like today, people want the leader to judge us, go out before us and FIGHT OUR BATTLES and pay our mortgage, and give us a car and keep it full of gas and etc. etc. etc.
Just like ancient Israel, we have chosen to push God out of the picture and have a human ruler and just like Israel they lived to regret it.
There is an old adage: "It is easier to get into something than to get out of something." This adage is very appropriate for us right now in this time. We have a ruler who only wants to take and take and take and give very little back in return. He wants the hard working people to support the deadbeats of society while calling it "redistribution of wealth." Why don't we see him and the other liberals start the process by donating three quarters of their personal wealth? Many or most of them are in some form of corruption up to their armpits and we will not see them give anything up. They only want 'others' to give up their wealth and call this fair!
