As the example of ancient Rome, when Nero fiddled while the city burned, the modern Christian church is responsible for the moral morass that we now face in the United States of America. She has put pleasure over sacrifice, materialism over ministry and human plans over Scripture in order to maintain her position before the masses. This is not a new phenomenon; history is replete with the same compromises. Yet there are in every generation a few who refuse too bend, bow or burn as did Hananiah, Mishiel and Azariah. You may not recognize them by these names, but most will recall the pagan names given to them by their captors, the Babylonians. They were given names that reflected the gods of the Babylonians: Shadrach, Meshach and Abed-nego.
In every immoral war of aggression, there has been a deliberate attempt to silence the freedom loving people and true Christian believers of the land so that the lies necessary for domination could take root and grow. A few stood tall regardless of the consequences as they answered to the Ultimate Judge of all, the LORD God of the Bible. Such were those who stood tall against Adolph Hitler, our most recent and well known villain of modern time. Note the method of attack used in WWII.
When Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany in 1933, he laid out his strategy, to his inner circle, for the Church and her pastors to make them an irrelevant force which ultimately would pose no threat to the Nazi agenda for that great nation. Hitler made the following statement about church leaders.
“I promise you that if I wish to, I could destroy the Church in just a few years. It is hollow, it is rotten and false through and through. One push and the whole structure would collapse. We should trap the preachers by their notorious greed and self-indulgence. We shall thus be able to settle everything with them in perfect peace and harmony. I shall give them a few years’ reprieve. Why should we quarrel? They will swallow anything in order to keep their material advantage. The parsons will be made to dig their own graves; they will betray their God for us. They will betray anything for the sake of their miserable jobs and incomes.”
The church in America has today, 2009, become very much like the church in Germany in the 1930’s. The gospel of Jesus Christ has been so watered down by those seeking their own fame and fortune that it is no longer recognizable. Compromise is rampant as pastors search for a new strategy to get and hold the large crowds so that empires may be built to their own glory. Wealth and fame have replaced God in the lives of many of today’s preachers. This has resulted in what is referred to by many as a ‘Feel Good Gospel.’ Only those passages that make the attenders feel good about themselves are used. Missing is the warning of eternal hell, repentance from sin, accountability, judgment, maturity, responsibility, obedience and a host of other like terms. I have been greatly grieved at hearing a steady diet of such messages over the past few years from most preachers that I have heard. I have not heard the word hell used in a number of years. I strongly urge my readers to look up a great preacher from the Second Great Awakening in America, Charles Finney, and read his sermon entitled: “Preaching So As To Convert Nobody.” In this he lists 67 things to do so that you won’t offend your listeners, but also assure that they will not become Christians.
Another man who refused to budge even in the face of the death sentence was Martin Luther as he stood against his own church, the Roman Catholic Church, in all her corruption and wealth of his day. Martin Luther declared,
"If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages, there the loyalty of the soldier is proved, and to be steady on all the battlefield besides is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point" (The God Who is There, Francis Schaeffer).
Martin Luther further declared,
“The preacher who does not rebuke the sins of the rulers through God’s word spoken publicly, boldly, and honestly, strengthens the sins of the tyrants, and becomes a partaker in them and bears responsibility for them.”
In Scripture we see John the Baptist rebuking King Herod for having his brother Philip’s wife and it cost him his head. All who stand against tyrants risk being imprisoned or killed for their stand.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer denounced the church’s failure to speak out against the evil. In 1940 that lonely voice of truth proclaimed,
“We, the Church, must confess that we have not proclaimed often or clearly enough the message of the one God, who has revealed Himself for all time in Christ Jesus and Who will tolerate no other gods beside Himself. She must confess her timidity, her cowardice, her evasiveness and her dangerous concessions. She was silent when she should have cried out, because the blood of the innocent was crying aloud to heaven. The Church must confess that she has witnessed the lawless application of brutal force, the physical and spiritual suffering of countless innocent people, oppression, hatred, and murder, and that she has not raised her voice on behalf of the victims and has not found ways to hasten to their aid. The Church is guilty of the deaths of the weakest and most defenseless brothers of Jesus Christ. The Church must confess that she has desired security and peace, quiet, possessions and honor, to which she has no right. She has not borne witness to the truth of God. And by her silence, she has rendered herself guilty because of her unwillingness to suffer for what she knows to be right.”
Today, the blood of fifty million aborted babies cries out to God and very few pastors will dare mention it from their pulpits for fear that it might offend someone in the congregation who has killed their unborn baby. This is murder and should be noted as such. Thankfully, God will forgive even murder if we confess it and forsake it. I have known women in churches who have had multiple abortions and think that they have done nothing wrong.
Pastor Martin Niemöller was yet another of that lonely band of Christian heroes that stood against the tide of evil in Nazi Germany. He was arrested by the Gestapo for faithfully preaching the word of God. Now Niemöller was what we would today call a celebrity; he was a national hero. He had been a U-boat commander highly decorated in the First World War, and only then after the war did he enter the ministry. His congregation in the Berlin suburb of Dahlem was one of the wealthiest and most influential evangelical churches in the land, its membership made up of high government officials, generals, and so on. And the arrest of this pastor from that church was highly controversial. The judge before whom he was arraigned on charges of sedition seemed genuinely puzzled why a patriot like Martin Niemöller would criticize Adolf Hitler, the man whom the German people hailed as their Fuhrer, an absolute leader, to whom unquestioned obedience was owed. The magistrate pleaded with the minister to end his attacks upon the Nazi regime and upon the Fuhrer. He promised Niemöller immediate release and the opportunity to return to his pulpit "today," if only he would agree to do so. Niemöller’s reply was steadfast:
“I cannot and I will not be silent, because God is my Fuhrer.”
Today in America only a hand full of heroes stand boldly in their pulpits to proclaim that “God is my President!” Many voices within the Christian church cry out this message of compromise and charge these heroes with being out of fellowship with God because of their bold stand against evil. These preachers hide in the walls of their church buildings and pretend that all is well in America, while outside America is in grave danger of being taken over by Socialism. This is not an idle threat, daily our elected and dominating leaders are moving America into this hellish ideology. The government is seeking to take over the nation’s most powerful assets and the latest is our health care system. This entity represents one sixth of our GDP/gross domestic product and is in the crosshairs of Mr. Obama and his cronies. Slander should never be a part of our rhetoric but truth should never cease to be at the center of it. The liberals have used Political Correctness to silence the church and it has done a great job of doing this. The multiplied millions of Christians and other religious and moral citizens sit silently by while evil moves in to Change America drastically. There is a groundswell of opposition that is on the move today but it MUST have the pulpits and the pastors/preachers of this nation to wake up this sleeping giant. Most refuse to get involved, much like the people who stood by and did nothing as they watched a girl gang raped in New York recently.
Dr. D. James Kennedy, Dr. James Dobson, Dr. Jerry Falwell are but three of our recent heroes. These men gave, and Dobson is still giving, their utmost to wake up the church. If this sleeping giant was taught the whole truth and were challenged to speak out, America could be transformed in a month. Dr. Kennedy preached the most fiery message I ever heard him deliver entitled: “Will The Church Forget?” In it he referred to many of today’s moral and social sins and each time ended with, “And 300,000 pulpits in America are silent!” There are approximately 400,000 Christian churches in America and sadly three quarters of these churches are playing Bingo, having teas and socials, BBQ’s and a number of other really important events while America is being destroyed.
In the Old Testament times, God sent prophets to wake up his people when the priests (similar to today’s pastors) had failed to teach the people His word. Today, America is in desperate need of a wave of prophets who will bring this sleeping giant to her feet and restore America to her godly heritage. Just think, abortion could be ended; homosexuality would be put back into the closet, adultery (breaking our marriage vows) and fornication (sex without being married), government corruption and all other ills we now face in America would be made right if this sleeping giant would just wake up.
All we have to do is to look at what happened in America’s First and Second Great Awakenings to see what could be if we restore God to His rightful place in His church and in this nation. If America’s churches DO NOT experience a revival and if America DOES NOT experience a Third Great Awakening I fear that we will see this great nation go onto the ash heap of history as did all other great nations who refused to deal with the blatant sin in them. The accepting of homosexuality has spelled the end of many nations in history. This and the killing of the innocent seem to be the final straw in the eyes of God to bring out His wrath and judgment on that land. Just look at Sodom and Gomorrah as an example. Geological evidence is abundant in the area to show that white hot brimstone/sulphur balls fell on these cities and destroyed them completely and were never rebuilt again.
Will God’s people sit silently still and let this happen to our beloved America? Only you can answer this question and I hope that you answer it soon. The hour glass is almost empty. If God judged His people Israel for its sin and complaisance, then know that He will do the same with America if we do not repent and return to Him and His word. May God have mercy on America and wake up this sleeping giant through her pastors.
The prophet Daniel said it best, "... but the people who know their God will display strength and take action." Daniel 11:32
